What is floral water?
Floral water, also called hydrosol, is obtained by steam distillation of plants in a still. During the process, the water separates from the essential oil, and the scented water is collected after cooling. Rich in aromatic compounds, it offers beneficial active care for the face, body and hair.
Floral waters come from flowers or leaves and are composed of 99% water and 1% active ingredients. Gentle and non-irritating, they are suitable for all skin types, including babies.
Since each flower has specific properties, many floral waters are used in cosmetics. Note that the extraction method for floral waters and essential oils is similar.
The benefits and virtues of hydrosols
Floral waters have unique benefits and many unsuspected virtues for the skin, hair and body.
They can be applied with a cotton pad, a compress or a spray. They are often used as a makeup remover, conditioner, hair care, or as an aqueous phase in homemade cosmetics. They can be used pure or diluted with water.
Known for their purifying, regenerating, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, clarifying and astringent properties, floral waters are gentle, pleasant and refreshing. They respect the pH of the skin and are non-irritating, both for the skin and the mucous membranes.
Lightly scented and colored, hydrosols are particularly used in facial care, where they cleanse, soothe and moisturize the skin, thus becoming precious allies for a daily beauty ritual. They bring a feeling of freshness to the skin and make it more pleasant to the touch.
In body care, floral waters regulate perspiration, promote healing, treat cellulite and relieve heavy legs. They are also effective for oral hygiene.
In addition, floral waters treat dandruff, soothe itchy scalps, and make hair stronger, shinier and softer while helping to prevent hair loss.
Each floral water has its own cosmetic virtues!
Each floral water has distinct properties depending on the flower used. Among the best known are rose, sage, chamomile, lavender, cornflower, witch hazel, orange blossom, peppermint, immortelle and Italian helichrysum floral waters.
Rose floral water
Rose floral water is famous for its astringent properties. It tones, hydrates and firms the skin. It also helps reduce redness related to intense emotions. The most commonly used varieties in cosmetics are Damascena and Centifolia, which are rich in geraniol, offering anti-aging and antioxidant benefits.
